AP Top 25 Rankings College Football Week 13: Alabama Holds #1 while Florida Jumps to #2 and Oklahoma Leapfrogs Texas
The AP Top 25 rankings were shook up just enough to cause added confusion to the BCS national title game following Saturday’s action. While the Alabama Crimson Tide maintained their spot atop the latest AP Top 25 rankings their SEC East rival Florida Gators inched up to #2 following their dismantling of Citadel coupled with the Texas Tech loss.
It was Oklahoma’s absolute domination of the then #2 Texas Tech Red Raiders that convinced voters that the Sooners should leapfrog Texas and take the #3 spot this week despite their loss to the Longhorns earlier this year. By a margin of just four points the Sooners hold the important #3 spot but that could be irrelevant when the BCS standings are announced later.
The Longhorns had the week off and remain at #4 and they’ll be rooting for Oklahoma State next week when they host the Sooners. As it stands the Big 12 South is a three-way tie with the Longhorns, Sooners and Red Raiders all with one loss and the top ranked BCS team will earn the ticket to the Big 12 championship game.
On the outside looking in are the #5 USC Trojans whose national championship hopes are further complicated by the fact they may not even win the Pac-10 due to their loss to Oregon State earlier this year.
That leaves Penn State at #6 but still carrying the possibility of earning a ticket to the national championship game in Miami if things go their way. They destroyed Michigan State on Saturday to win the Big Ten title and earn a ticket to the Rose Bowl but they could find themselves playing for much more if any of the teams ahead of them fall in the next few weeks.
