USA Today Top 25 College Football Rankings Week 13: Alabama Crimson Tide Hold Top Spot, Oklahoma Sooners Vault to #2
While the Alabama Crimson Tide had the week off and remained the #1 team in the USA Today Top 25 college football Week 13 rankings there was a bit of a shakeup as the Oklahoma Sooners shot up three spots to #2 after embarrassing then #2 Texas Tech on Saturday. The Sooners passed Texas, Florida and Texas Tech and are now in position to earn the ticket to a Big 12 championship, of course they still have to get past Oklahoma State next week.
The Florida Gators maintained their #3 position in this week’s USA Today Top 25 after impressing nobody in their destruction of the Citadel Bulldogs. The Gators still control their own destiny, much like the Crimson Tide. If they can win next week against Florida State and then win the SEC championship they will be in Miami playing for the BCS national title.
Despite their win over Oklahoma earlier this year the #4 Texas Longhorns find themselves trailing the Sooners in the voters mind. That could change when the BCS rankings are revealed where head-to-head matchups play a significant role. The Longhorns are locked in a three-way tie with the Sooners and the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Big 12 South, all battling for a ticket to the Big 12 championship and hopes of a BCS national championship appearance.
The USC Trojans continue to pose an interesting scenario as they hold on to #5 this week in the national polls but they’re not even the top team in the Pac-10. It seems unlikely that the Trojans could make it to Miami but with all the teams ahead of them facing conference championship games things could bounce in the Trojans favor.
Penn State sealed a Big Ten title and a trip to the Rose Bowl but they still have BCS national championship dreams and, like USC, could sneak their way in with some big losses in the Big 12 and SEC.
