Matt Cassel threw for 415 yards and three touchdowns, Randy Moss had 125 yards receiving and three TDs and Wes Welker added 120 yards receiving as the New England Patriots (7-4) went on the road and knocked off their AFC East rival Miami Dolphins (6-5) 48-28 on Sunday.
Despite the final score the game remained tight through the opening minutes of the fourth quarter as both teams traded points over the first 50 minutes.
The Dolphins carried a 7-3 advantage into the second quarter after Chad Pennington found Greg Camarillo on a 3-yard toss but Cassel put the Patriots in front 10-7 when he scored on a quarterback keeper from 8-yards out. Pennington showed he could use his legs as well as he answered with a 7-yard run to put Miami in front 14-10 but Cassel answered with a 25-yard toss to Moss for the 17-14 advantage at the half.
Pennington put the Dolphins in front early in the third frame when he found Casey Cramer on a 2-yard toss only to see Cassel answer with an 8-yard TD pass to Moss. Kevin Faulk then gave the Patriots some breathing room when he closed the quarter with a 21-yard touchdown run to give New England a 31-21 lead heading into the fourth.
Miami climbed back into the game when Ricky Williams hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Pennington but Cassel and Moss hooked up for the third time, this one a 29-yard TD and the ten-point cushion was reclaimed. Stephen Gostkowski added a 30-yard field goal with seven minutes left in the game and BenJarvus Green-Ellis put the stamp on the game with a one-yard TD run with 37 seconds left on the clock.
