Prince Philip's 'ancient' body falling apart

Britain's Prince Philip has joked his "ancient" body is falling apart.

The queen's husband, who turns 90 in June, was invited to the Oldie magazine's annual awards where he will be named as Consort of the Year tonight (10.02.11) but is unable to attend.

However he sent a letter to organisers of the black-tie event to be hosted by legendary broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan, joking "bits are beginning to drop off the ancient frame".

In the letter signed "Philip" and written on Sandringham House headed paper - the royal grandfather, who last year cut back on royal duties due to his age, said: "I much appreciate your invitation to receive an 'Oldie of the Year Award'."

"There is nothing like it for morale to be reminded that the years are passing - ever more quickly - and that bits are beginning to drop off the ancient frame. But it is nice to be remembered at all."

He continued: "I regret not being able to receive the award in person, but I will not be conveniently in reach of London at the time. I hope the party will be a great success."

The star-studded guests at tonight's ceremony are expected to have the letter read out to them. Previous winners of the main Oldie of the Year Award includes Joanna Lumley, Sir David Attenborough and Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
