Republican Congressman Resigns amid Controversy

by Daun Lee

Christopher Lee a Congressman in New Yorks 26th district resigned after reports circulated that he sent shirtless pictures via his cell phone to a woman he met through Craigslist. The husband and father contacted the 34 year old Maryland resident through a Women Seeking Men Ad on the popular classified website. He misrepresented himself as a divorced 39 year old lobbyist. While communicating with the woman, Lee sent a picture of himself while shirtless and flexing his muscles. The woman discovered after internet research the identity of the Congressman and ended contact with him but did leak the photo to gossip website Gawker. He joins the ranks of many politicians and celebrities who have been involved in sex scandals throughout the years.

A growing controversial trend among people is sending nude photos through cell phone texts now dubbed sexting and if unwanted can be viewed as sexual harassment. Remember the Brett Favre scandal? He got into trouble and was accused of sexual harassment by Jen Sterger when he sent her numerous texts of him in the nude.  Sterger demanded he be thrown out of the football league.

The ability to take pictures with your cell phone and send it to your friends is a fun way to stay in touch, but when abused can be alienating. The sexting fad creates a new environment for men and women to become sexually harassed. Some individuals like the prospect of getting nude texts but for others the unwanted images can be distressing
