Venezuela’s Opposition Makes Gains in Regional Polls, Hugo Chavez Allies Hold Majority of Governorships

While Venezuela’s opposition made gains in regional polls it was Hugo Chavez who came out ahead in Sunday’s vote as his allies continued to hold a significant majority of the country’s governorships.

Chavez declared the outcome of the voting was further endorsement for his socialist vision for Venezuela telling a crowd, “For me, as the leader of the Venezuelan socialist project, the people are telling me: 'Chavez, keep on the same path.’”

The opposition did win the key states of Miranda and Zulia, and secured the mayoral elections in Caracas providing the opposition with hope. Leader Manuel Rosales saw the gains as symbolic, saying “What's important is that the map of Venezuela has started to change.”

Prior to the elections Chavez controlled 21 of the 22 governorships, after Sunday it was down to 17 governorships.
