Russian Warships Arrive in Venezuela for Joint Exercises

Russian warships have arrived off the coast of Venezuela to participate in joint exercises with the South American country, making good on an agreement forged by Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev and Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez earlier this year.

Medvedev has a scheduled two-day visit in Latin America beginning on Wednesday. He is attempting to strengthen ties with countries in the region, a move that the U.S. views with skeptical eyes.

The move to send warships to Venezuela is seen as a response to the U.S. decision to build a missile shield in Poland, something Russia had called a threat to their security. While the U.S. has said the base would be used to intercept missiles Russia has declared the proposed structure would be an aggressive act.

Shortly after the United States announced the plans Medvedev and Chavez agreed to conduct joint naval exercises. Maneuvers are set to begin on Wednesday and future exercises will be held at sea beginning on Dec. 1.
