Somali pirates who hijacked the Saudi-owned oil tanker Sirius Star have moved the vessel and its 25-member crew further north and in close proximity to other seized ships sitting off Somalia’s coast.
For the past ten days the Sirius Star, containing 2 million barrels of oil valued at $100 million, has been held by the pirates who have demanded a ransom for the release of the vessel and crew. The pirates opted to move the ship closer to a second large vessel, the MV Faina, which was hijacked in September.
The MV Faina was carrying tanks and weapons as well as a crew when it was seized by the pirates while as it passed through the waters off Somalia.
While the move to put the Sirius Star near the MV Faina and U.S. Navy ships who are monitoring the Faina it also puts them in an area that has a high concentration of pirates.
