Jamaican Parliament Votes to Keep Death Penalty

It has been 20 years since an inmate has been put to death in Jamaica but on Tuesday members of parliament voted to end the moratorium in an effort to curb the island’s extraordinary murder rate.

In 1988 Jamaica opted to halt the death penalty but with the Jamaica Labour Party back in control the issue was taken up once more. As part of the vote members of parliament were allowed to vote what they believed rather than strictly along party lines.

Those who voted against the death penalty pointed to problems within the police and justice systems while those in favor declared the move would act as a deterrent to violent crime.

Jamaica uses hanging as their method of death. There are currently nine men on death row in Jamaica.
