Whoopi Relates to Sheen
The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg comes clean about her past as a functioning addict and what helped her eventually get help.
Not all addicts wind up in an embarrassing video clip on TMZ. Some struggling with substance abuse are able to remain “functioning addicts.” As The View staff discussed Charlie Sheen’s recent troubles, co-host Whoopi Goldberg confessed that she was once a high-functioning drug addict.
"He is an alcoholic, he is a drug user,” Goldberg said of Sheen, discussing his alleged decision to return to work on his hit sitcom. “I was a functioning drug addict, I showed up for work because I knew a lot of people would be out of work and I wouldn’t get a check that I needed to buy my drugs."
Goldberg’s Hope for Sheen
Goldberg’s honesty continued as she admitted that she eventually hit bottom – not leaving bed for days due to irrational fears – and fortunately got help. Now she says she’s “straight as an arrow.” Goldberg believes Sheen can find that same sobriety – if he really wants to get clean. Like many others in Hollywood and beyond, though, she’s not sure he’s there yet. There’s been a lot of discussion in the media about whether Sheen is ready to quit partying. He’s currently undergoing drug and alcohol treatment via a customized plan at his home.
