FDA Approves Tool in the Fight against Breast Cancer

by Daun Lee

A new type of a mammogram that uses 3-D imaging to detect breast cancer in women has been approved by Food and Drug Administration. The Selenia Dimensions Systems developed by Hologic Inc is a new x-ray system that allows doctors an advantage in screening for breast cancer. This new screening tool allows a clearer image of masses that appear in breast tissue. The Selenia Dimensions System is capable of taking 2-D and 3-D images allowing doctors to compare the two images side by side. Comparing the two images helped doctors find more cancerous tumors than with the 2-D images alone.

Early detection is a major factor in surviving any type of cancer. Many people who have cancers don’t catch them early enough to prevent their deaths. Innovations in medicine have allowed many cancer patients live longer though early detection and lifesaving therapies.

All cancer patients will benefit from earlier detection including those individuals that suffer from mesothelioma, a cancer that affects the linings of the lung and heart. Starting treatment in the first stages of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, can significantly reduce the diseases high mortality rate.

Many people who work in construction and renovation are at a high risk of developing this severe type of cancer which is directly linked to exposure to asbestos. Until the mid-80’s asbestos was a commonly used building material. Many buildings and homes still have asbestos in their structure, so people who fear exposure should get testing to determine if they have mesothelioma.
