A Central American Airways flight carrying 12 passengers and 2 pilots crashed into a mountain in Honduras early Monday morning, killing everyone aboard. Honduras Assistant Secretary for Public Works Rodolfo Rovelo, United Workers Federation of Honduras leader Jose Israel Salinas, former Economy Secretary Carlos Chain and three United States citizens were among the dead.
The Let L-410 aircraft was on a regular flight from San Pedro Sula to the Toncontin International Airport in Tegucigalpa when it went down while descending for landing. The cause of the crash remains unclear, but low visibility may have been a factor.
"The last report we had was that the pilot was in an area of low visibility when he was trying to reach the runway," said Central American Airways manager Francisco Pacheco.
The crash is under investigation. So far, the remains of 10 of the passengers have been recovered from the crash site in the town of Las Mesitas, which is about 13 miles north of Tegucigalpa.
Central American Airways is not affiliated with the United States airline of the same name.
