The European Union Naval Force says a Maltese owned ship that has not been heard from since Saturday was likely hijacked by pirates. Communication with the MV Sinin was lost Saturday after the ship’s crew sent out a distress signal saying they were being attacked. The vessel was in the Arabian Sea about 350 nautical miles east of Oman when the signal was sent.
After communication was lost, the MV Sinin -- carrying 23 crew members and about 52,000 tons of iron ore – changed courses and headed towards Somalia. The vessel was originally bound for Singapore.
A Combined Maritime Forces aircraft was sent to the scene and photographed two skiffs onboard the MV Sinin.
Last week in two separate incidents, two tankers were seized by pirates. The Italian owned MV Savina Caylyn was hijacked Tuesday in the Indian Ocean about 670 nautical miles from Socotra Island. On Wednesday, the Panamanian-owned MV Irene SL was seized in the Arabian Sea about 350 nautical miles off the coast of Oman.
