A shake-up is on the way in the huge international mobile telecommunications sector, with traditional providers being faced with a working product which undercuts their prices by up to 80% on mobile calling and texting costs.
Communication platform Webtel.mobi, which launched internationally recently offering mobile calling and texting worldwide at up to 80% less than standard mobile rates, is being hailed as “a revolution” by consumer organisations, with industry analysts watching closely to see the reaction from the traditional mobile phone networks.
Frost and Sullivan mobile telecommunications analyst Saverio Romeo said: “International calls are so expensive simply due to lack of attention by the mobile industry and a lack of pressure from regulatory authorities. Webtel.mobi will definitely have a great impact on the competition and a great impact on reducing these charges.”
Webtel.mobi provides mobile calling and texting service to persons who have mobile phones which can access the internet. The same services are provided to all countries, to all users regardless of network. Users use their own phones and phone numbers, and are able to sign up and use the service immediately without any long-term or other contracts. The same rates apply worldwide.
Although the service is built specifically for use from mobile phones, many users are also accessing the service from their desktop or laptop computers to use it for landline to landline calls as well, where the ultra-low calling costs also apply.
The service is simple to operate and extremely easy to use. Once a user has signed up and bought credit via a PayPal link on the site, they merely key in the number that they wish to call from their mobile and click “call”. The call is then put through by Next Generation telecoms switches, exactly the same as with a normal call – just up to 80% less in cost.
Sending text messages is just as simple, with users keying in the number that they want to text, typing their message, and clicking on send.
Webtel.mobi was scheduled to launch in early 2009 in 20 languages, but the release of the English-language product was brought forward to November 2008 to provide relief in terms of lowering communication costs to consumers during the international credit crunch.
According to a Webtel.mobi spokesman, “Communication is an essential requirement to both consumers and businesses. For both small and large businesses, high phone charges can during this Credit Crunch and recession can force them out of business. Our service allows businesses to continue communicating as normal, but at a fraction of the costs they are used to incurring.
“Immediately being able to possibly cut a monthly company communications bill from $/£/€ 50 000 down to $/£/€ 10 000 per month for big businesses, or from $/£/€ 5 000 down to $/£/€ 1 000 per month for small businesses, can mean the difference between staying afloat or going bust. Moreover, this cost-cutting doesn’t require any expenses, infrastructure, hardware or change of phones / network providers for the business at all. They just go online and immediately save money – it’s as simple as that”.
Similarly, private users – on both “Pay-as-you-Talk” and Contracts – are using the service in droves. Being able to make the same amount of calls or send the same number of texts with savings of up to up to 80% is an absolute value-proposition to them, especially in these hard economic times. It can be the difference between paying $/£/€ 50 per month for calls and texts with a standard provider, or paying $/£/€ 10 per month for the same number of calls and texts with the Webtel.mobi service. The fact that consumers can do this immediately, and from their own phones, with their own numbers, on a very easy platform, makes it even more appealing.
The service is also proving extremely valuable to travelling businesspeople and expats abroad. They are saving huge amounts on their calls and texts, as they incur no outgoing roaming charges when making calls or sending texts from Webtel.mobi. They only pay an incoming roaming charge for calls - which costs a fraction of the outgoing roaming cost; and they pay no roaming charges on texts. Also, because the Webtel.mobi service provides actual calls to mobile phones, as opposed to VoIP calls, so there are no data transfer costs, and the service is not dependent on WiFi coverage.
Webtel.mobi is experiencing signups from all English-language countries internationally, and even though its multi-language platform is only due to launch early in 2009, it is already experiencing signups from non-English language countries.
The service is already being touted as the most significant event in mobile phone communication in recent times.
