A homemade drug-smuggling submarine estimated to be worth $2 million was discovered in southwestern Colombia on Sunday. Intelligence reports and tips led the Colombian military to the 100-foot-long, fully submersible vessel in the Timbiqui River in Cauca province. It was unoccupied at the time and no one has been arrested. No drugs were in the submarine.
Naval officials say the sub, which could carry 6 crew members, was equipped with two diesel engines and navigational equipment. It is capable of transporting up to eight tons of drugs and could travel up to 30 feet underwater.
Col. Manuel Hurtado of Colombia's Pacific Command, told the Associated Press that the submarine has "the capacity to sail totally underwater and the ability to travel to the coast of Mexico without surfacing.”
