Nuevo Leon Police Official Shot to Death, Burned

A top police official in northern Mexico was found dead inside his truck Sunday night in the city of Monterrey. Officials in the state of Nuevo Leon say Homero Guillermo Salcido Trevino was shot 5 times and his body was set on fire inside of his vehicle. Trevino was the head of security in Nuevo Leon.

Drug traffickers are believed to be responsible for Salcido’s murder. Violence in Nuevo Leon has escalated in recent years as the Gulf cartel and Zetas cartel battle for control of the area’s drug market. Nuevo Leon Governor Rodrigo Medina said the death of Salcido “does nothing but to drive us forward, to make us redouble our strategy” in the fight against cartels and drug violence.

Earlier this month the remains of a Nuevo Leon prison guard was found inside a car in a parking lot in Monterrey. The body of 60-year-old Franciso Martinez Ramirez had been dismembered and dumped in the car.
