After this week’s protests in Tehran, Iranian conservative lawmakers called for the execution of opposition leaders and former presidential candidates Mehdi Karrubi and Mir Hossein Moussavi. Karrubi and Moussavi supported Monday’s demonstrations and lawmakers now want them tried for sedition.
Members of parliament marched through the main hall Tuesday, chanting “Death to Mousavi, death to Karroubi” and “Moussavi, Karrubi ... execute them."
Security forces battled Monday’s protesters with batons and tear gas. At least one person was shot and killed while several others were seriously injured. Dozens of demonstrators were arrested.
While Iran’s deputy police chief called the demonstrations “illegal gatherings,” the European Union foreign policy chief urged officials to “fully respect and protect the rights of their citizens, including freedom of expression and the right to assemble peacefully."
The protests come after weeks of demonstrations in Tunisia and Egypt resulted in the rulers of both countries resigning.
