Jeopardy Tests the Future of Search Engines

by Daun Lee

IBM sent its super computer Watson to Jeopardy to see how the artificial intelligence competes with human intelligence. After Mondays’ episode the results were promising for the technology named after IBM’ founder Thomas Watson. It tied second place with the human Brad Rutter despite some glitches it encountered.  Watson is scheduled to compete for two more days leaving many to wonder how artificial intelligence will affect the world of search engines and search engine optimization. It may be some time

IBM’s Watson can filter through thousands of pages of data in order to answer questions as efficiently as a human. Leaving many people to wonder if we are approaching the day when a computer takes away human jobs. This could be helpful in medical and technological research and its creator think people should be thankful for the technology instead of fearful. Watson can answer questions rapidly which may be helpful to search engines but will the artificial intelligence be able to create current content so effectively employed by search engine optimization.

The profitability of a company can largely rest on internet marketing as more and more people rely on the web to find answers and products. The importance of search engine optimization was proven last week when The Huffington Post was purchased for over 300 million dollars by AOL/ Time Warner. The acclaimed news service has successfully employed search engine optimization  to increase its value over the years.
