Iraqi Parliament Approves Deal on U.S. Troop Withdrawal

The Iraqi parliament has approved a deal that will remove U.S. troops from the country’s streets by the middle of next year and lead to their complete removal from Iraq by the end of 2011.

While the agreement has been seen as a major step forward in Iraq nearing complete sovereignty there were several rallies prior to the vote that called for U.S. removal much earlier.

Of the 198 members of parliament present for the vote 149 voted in favor of the deal. The agreement still requires the ratification by Iraq’s Presidential Council but an approval is expected.

A stipulation of the deal requires that a referendum be held in the middle of next year at which time another vote will be taken and if that fails to subscribe to the withdrawal the U.S. troops may be forced to leave earlier.
