Upper House of Czech Parliament Backs U.S. Missile Defense Shield

Senators in the upper house of the Czech parliament have supported the United States plan to construct a part of a missile defense shield.

According to the U.S. plans they would build a radar system on Czech soil while placing 10 interceptor rockets in Poland. While the U.S. has said the shield would be to defend against “rogue” states Russia has been highly critical of the proposed shield, declaring it a threat to their security.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said his country would move missiles to positions that would neutralize the U.S. shield.

The support for the defense shield by the upper house was expected but the lower house still has to approve the measure, something that remains unlikely.
