Vietnamese officials are investigating what caused a tour boat carrying 27 people to sink in Ha Long Bay Thursday. At least 12 people – 10 of them citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and France – died in the incident. Fifteen people were pulled from the bay alive.
The Truong Hai sank around 5 a.m. local time near Ti Top Island. A statement posted on the website of the Quang Ninh province government said it appears problems with the hull of the boat may be the reason for the sinking. A plank may have been ripped from the hull and there may have been a leak in the engine room.
Authorities have recovered all of the dead. They have not been identified. No other details were available.
