Sexual Abuse Rampant in Egypt According to Reporters

by Daun Lee

The news of the attack on CBS reporter Lara Logan was shocking to the world. She was separated from her crew amid a mob. The mob beat and sexually assaulted the 39 year old news correspondent but details of her attack have not been released to the public. She has returned home to Washington to be with her husband and children. So far she has not spoken publically about her ordeal stating she wasn’t ready.

According to a story appearing in The New York Times other Western women who work and reside in Egypt have been victims of sexual abuse and harassment. Using sexual harassment is a common intimidation tactic employed by pro Mumbarak gangs. The reporters also stated that politics play a more important role in Egypt than the rights of women.

In the US the rights of women are taken seriously and sexual harassment and assaults are generally taken seriously, with the exception of the military. Sexual harassment lawyers fight for the rights of women and men in the work place.  Despite their efforts people are still sexually harassed. At least 31 percent of female workers and 7 percent of male workers are harassed while on the job and need sexual harassment lawyer to help them in their hostile work environments. Many cases don’t get reported but the encouragement of a sexual harassment attorney may give them the daring to speak out against the abuse they suffer.
