Ethiopian Troops to Leave Somalia by End of Year

Nearly two years after sending troops into Somalia in an effort to help the government rid Mogadishu of Islamic militants Ethiopia has said they will remove all their forces from the country by the end of the year.

While Islamist forces were removed from power in Mogadishu they still maintain a strong presence in the city where they launch frequent attacks targeting Ethiopian and government troops.

In a letter sent to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and African Union Commission Chairman Jean Ping the outline of Ethiopia’s decision to pull-out were detailed.

Somalia has spent more than a decade struggling to put into place an effective government and with the absence of Ethiopian troops many fear the country could continue to deteriorate.
