Since the US became involved in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, it’s estimated that 300,000 troops returning from combat have either post traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury.
As a result of these war-induced conditions, as well as the availability of prescription drugs, substance abuse, particularly narcotics, is a growing problem for the US military.
“We’ve got a dangerous combination of physical and emotional pain with our troops,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Obviously, war trauma brings so much pain in a variety of forms. There’s no denying true physical pain exists and, when that’s the case, obviously well-managed pain relief is in order. The challenge comes with those experiencing post traumatic stress disorder or depression and emotional pain which sometimes can manifest itself in physical pain. It’s so important to discern the difference and to make certain that the patient is given the proper course of treatment, be it physical pain management, emotional pain management and/or both.”
A new survey conducted by the Department of Defense indicates that illegal use of prescription drugs has tripled in the last decade. In addition, spending for psychiatric drugs has doubled to $280 million across all branches of military.
