Celebrity Addiction Requires Specialized Treatment

Recent troubles of celebrities like Lohan, Sheen, Cabrera and Lucas highlight the extraordinary need for unique programs and innovative treatment approaches.

On the heels of substantial publicity dedicated to celebrity addiction troubles, Foundations Recovery Network seeks to emphasize unique solutions for addiction through integrated treatment. While many suffer from addiction, unprecedented media attention has been given to addicted individuals in the public eye, including actors Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan, NFL quarterback Ray Lucas, and most recently Major League Baseball player Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera has become the latest public figure whose substance abuse issue has made its way into mainstream media. News outlets have reported that an unsettling run-in with the law for Cabrera has his team and coaches worried that his problem is much greater than initially thought.

Cabrera, 27, was arrested Feb. 16, 2011, for a DUI after coming off his best season yet as a Detroit Tiger. In lieu of Cabrera’s struggle and the intense media coverage, it’s becoming increasingly more evident that special issues arise when public figures collide head-on with substance abuse.

“Very few people wanting to recover from addiction succeed on their first try,” said Rob Waggener, CEO of Foundations Recovery Network. “Unfortunately, people in the public eye have an even more challenging time because of added pressure and shame, which is why an integrated treatment approach is so important.”

Celebrities face the negative consequences of addiction under a media microscope, which can present unique challenges to recovery. For many people, not just celebrities, substance abuse isn’t the only issue—there are underlying causes that perpetuate an abuse problem, and vice versa. Integrated treatment addresses both addiction and its causes in order to yield a lasting recovery. Foundations Recovery Network specializes in this approach, believing that each person has particular issues that require an individualized plan for treatment.

Foundations Recovery Network will cover the aspects of integrated treatment when they host their “Power, Fame & Recovery” conference in September 2011. The event, which will address the complicated nature of fame and addiction recovery, is for treatment providers and professionals who are working to help those in the public eye with recovery solutions.
