Barack Obama Expected to Announce National Security Team on Monday, Robert Gates and Jim Jones Key Appointments

President-elect Barack Obama is expected to announce his national security team on Monday and while he has filled his cabinet with Democrats loyal to his campaign thus far he is said to be prepared to reach across the aisle when it comes to the defense of the country.

Obama is likely to keep Robert Gates as his defense secretary, a direct link to the current George Bush administration, and tap retired Gen. Jim Jones as his national security adviser. Jones was an ardent supporter of Republican John McCain during the presidential election.

Those two expected appointments are a break from the campaign message Obama carried throughout the election. While his rhetoric during the campaign often focused on ending U.S. involvement in Iraq his apparent decision to go with Gates and Jones looks to be in direct conflict with that sentiment.

Many Democrats had been hoping Obama would select former Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn for defense secretary.
