Academic summer camps are in high demand as budget cuts within schools are leaving students without the skills needed to excel in high school and get into the best colleges.
That’s the feeling of Bobbi DePorter, president of SuperCamp academic summer camps and Quantum Learning Network, an international education company that trains students, teachers and business professionals in Quantum Learning methods.
“You would think that in a tough economy enrollment would be down,” says DePorter. “But that’s not the case. Instead, we hear from parents that it’s more important than ever to make sure their kids are getting the enhanced learning and life skills to prepare them for the next level in school and life.”
As a result, SuperCamp is looking at another record year of enrollment in its teen summer camps and its youth summer camps in the U.S. SuperCamp summer programs will take place this summer in six states and at nine colleges, from California to North Carolina.
The company is seeing equally dramatic growth internationally, particularly in Asia, where programs will run this year in several countries.
SuperCamp is a multi-sensory experience using colors, music, and other sounds, as well as interactive feedback to stimulate the learning process and long-term retention. It is based on accelerated learning principles that Ms. DePorter first studied 30 years ago.
Campers from grades 6 through college learn pertinent academic skills in the areas of critical thinking, creative writing, reading comprehension, reading speed, study and test-taking techniques and much more. Interspersed among the learning skills is instruction in the life skills area. Students gain insight into communication, team building, motivation, trust, leadership and other important life skills that help them in school and in relationships with friends and family.
