Roddy Jones rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns, Jonathan Dwyer added 144 yards and a pair of TDs and Josh Nesbitt collected 44 yards rushing while leading the #18 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (9-3) past the #13 Georgia Bulldogs (9-3) 45-42 to end a seven-game series losing streak and gain state bragging rights for the year.
It was a tale of two halves as the Bulldogs looked to be in control heading into halftime as Matt Stafford tossed four touchdowns and Georgia was up 28-12. Stafford got things started with a one-yard toss to Tripp Chandler. Stafford was then picked off by Morgan Burnett who returned it 35-yards for a TD but a poor snap on the extra point left the Dogs in front 7-6.
Early in the second quarter Stafford found Mohamed Massaquoi on a 10-yard TD pass for the 14-6 advantage but Tech countered with a 65-yard drive that was capped by a 2-yard run from Lucas Cox but the two-point attempt failed to leave the score at 14-12. Stafford then tossed two more touchdown passes to Massaquoi, a 49-yarder and a 3-yarder and Georgia looked comfortable at the half.
That all changed in the third quarter as Tech got their ground game going full-tilt with a 60-yard touchdown run from Dwyer, an 8-yarder from Jones and another Dwyer followed with a 23-yarder and Scott Blair capped the third frame with a 28-yard field goal as the Yellow Jackets jumped in front 38-28.
The Bulldogs showed they had a running game as well as Knowshon Moreno brought the Bulldogs to within 38-35 on a 32-yard touchdown run but Jones answered for the Jackets with a 54-yard touchdown burst to give the Jackets a ten-point cushion with 7:13 left on the clock.
Stafford brought the Dogs down the field and found A.J. Green on a 12-yard touchdown with 4:04 left in the game to get Georgia to within three but Tech’s running game was too much and they managed to collected first downs to run out the clock and get the win.
