Graham Harrell was 41/50 passing for 311 yards and two touchdowns, Detron Lewis had 68 yards receiving and a TD and Baron Batch collected a pair of rushing touchdowns as the #7 Texas Tech Red Raiders (11-1, 7-1) overcame a 14-point deficit to knock off the Baylor Bears (4-8, 2-6) 35-28 on Saturday to keep their hopes of a Big 12 championship berth alive.
It looked like the Red Raiders were ready to roll over the Bears as Harrell led his squad on a 14-play, 60-yard drive on their opening possession and capped it with a 6-yard TD toss to Eric Morris for a 7-0 lead. Baylor wasn’t about to roll over though as the Bears responded with a drive of over seven minutes and quarterback Robert Griffin scored on a one-yard keeper to even the score.
Harrell was then picked off, setting up Griffin’s second touchdown run, a 13-yard effort to give the Bears a 13-7 advantage at the close of the opening quarter after the extra point failed.
Texas Tech bounced back and grabbed a narrow 14-13 lead early in the second quarter as Batch scored on a one-yard run but Griffin provided the answer once more as he found the endzone on a one-yard run with one second left in the half and when their two-point attempt was good the Bears were in front 21-14 at the break.
Baylor pushed their lead to 28-14 on their opening drive of the third quarter as Jacoby Jones scored from a yard out and Texas Tech was looking stunned. Shannon Woods helped shake the cobwebs after scoring on a one-yard run to pull the Red Raiders to within 28-21 and early in the fourth quarter Batch evened the score on a 3-yard run.
Harrell then put the Red Raiders in front on a 4-yard toss to Lewis to the Texas Tech defense stood tall to end the game. With the win the Red Raiders remain in the chase for the Big 12 South title and a ticket to the Big 12 championship game against Missouri. If Oklahoma loses on Saturday night the Red Raiders will get the nod.
