Sam Bradford threw for 370 yards and four touchdowns, Jermaine Gresham had 158 yards receiving and a pair of TDs, Chris Brown added 98 yards rushing and two TDs and DeMarco Murray collected 64 yards rushing and a touchdown as the #3 Oklahoma Sooners (11-1, 7-1) outgunned the #11 Oklahoma State Cowboys (9-3, 5-3) 61-41 on Saturday night and now wait to see how the three-way tie in the Big 12 South works out.
Both offenses took awhile to get going as the Sooners led 7-3 after the first quarter on a Murray 20-yard touchdown run but in the second frame things began to pick up. Zac Robinson put the Cowboys in front 10-7 on a 23-yard touchdown pass to Kendall Hunter but the Sooners quickly reclaimed the lead on a 2-yard touchdown run from Chris Brown. The Cowboys pulled to within 14-13 on a field goal from Dan Bailey but the Sooners found the endzone just before the end of the half when Bradford hit Gresham on a 3-yard TD to take a 21-13 lead into the break.
The Cowboys opened the third quarter with a scoring drive when Robinson hit Dez Bryant on a 6-yard touchdown toss to get within 21-19 but their two-point conversion resulted in a fumble that was collected by Frank Alexander who returned it for two-points to push the Sooners advantage to 23-19.
Bradford wasted little time getting the Sooners back in the endzone as he hit Gresham on a 73-yard touchdown pass to jump in front 30-19 but the Cowboys answered with a scoring drive of their own as Robinson scored on a 31-yard keeper to get Oklahoma State back to within four.
The offensive explosion continued though and Oklahoma closed the third quarter out with a 2-yard run to make it 37-26.
Robinson and Bryant hooked up again on the Cowboys next possession for a 17-yard touchdown and it became clear that neither team’s defense was going to stop the other’s offense. Oklahoma proved that point on their next possession when Bradford hit Brady Eldridge on a one-yard toss to get the ten-point cushion but on the ensuing kickoff Matthew Moreland went 90-yards for a touchdown to set the score at 44-41.
Bradford didn’t seem fazed in the least as he marched the Sooners down the field, eventually hitting Juaquin Iglesias on a 17-yard touchdown pass. Oklahoma’s defense then stopped the Cowboys and turned it into a 27-yard field from Jimmy Stevens with 2:55 left and then Brown added a 28-yard touchdown run in the closing minute to wrap up the scoring.
Oklahoma will now have to wait to see how the Big 12 South shakes out as they share the lead with the Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech. The Sooners are currently ranked ahead of the Longhorns in the AP but the Longhorns are ranked #2 in the BCS.
