Israeli Cabinet Approves Palestinian Prisoner Release

In an effort to bolster Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas’s West Bank administration against Hamas the Israeli cabinet has approved the release of 250 Palestinian prisoners.

The decision to free the prisoners follows a promise made by outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Nov. 17. Olmert has tried to help Abbas gain popularity in Gaza where Hammas rules.

Earlier this month Israel temporarily lifted a blockade of Gaza to allow humanitarian aid into the region.

While the decision to release the prisoners has been made in hopes of lessening the influence of Hammas the decision has been criticized by many in Israel who say the release only hurts their position in gaining the release of Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier who was captured in 2006.
