Somali Pirates Reach Agreement to Release Ukrainian Vessel

After holding the Ukrainian shipping vessel MV Faina for more than two months Somali pirates have agreed to release the ship following a deal made with the owners.

The MV Faina, carrying 33 tanks, ammunition and grenade launchers, was bound for Kenya when it was hijacked by pirate son Sept. 24. Pirates demanded a ransom for the safe release of the 21-member crew and the contents of the vessel and for two months the owners of the vessel have been involved in negotiations.

Initial reports put the ransom demand at $20 million but there have been no reports on the final figure.

Somali pirates are still holding the Sirius Star, a Saudi-owned vessel carrying 2 million barrels of oil worth more than $100 million and a 25-member crew.
