DeAngelo Williams rushed for 72 yards and four touchdowns, Steve Smith had 105 yards receiving on four catches and the Carolina Panthers (9-3) took advantage of a defensive breakdown by the Green Bay Packers (5-7) in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to earn a 35-31 victory on Sunday.
Williams gave Carolina a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with a one-yard TD run and after Mason Crosby kicked a field goal to get the Packers to within 7-3 in the second quarter the Panthers found the endzone once again as Jake Delhomme scored on a one-yard keeper. Aaron Rodgers got the Packers in the endzone when he hit Donald Driver on a 6-yard toss with 3:15 left in the half but the Panthers answered before the break with another one-yard TD run from Williams with 34 seconds on the clock.
Green Bay managed to tie the game in the third quarter after Crosby kicked his second field goal and Rodgers hooked up with Donald Lee on a 5-yard touchdown pass and Green Bay converted their two-point attempt.
The Packers grabbed their first lead of the game in the fourth when Rodgers tossed his third touchdown of the game, a 21-yarder to Greg Jennings for a 28-21 lead but that lead was quickly erased as Williams pounded in his third one-yard touchdown of the game to even the score.
With 1:57 left in the game Crosby put the Packers in front 31-28 on a 19-yard field goal but Mark Jones took the ensuing kickoff 45 yards and that set up a 54-yard pass from Delhomme to Steve Smith to get the Panthers down to the one-yard line where Williams found the endzone for the fourth time and sealed the win for Carolina.
