Ben Roethlisberger threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns, Willie Parker rushed for 87 yards and the Pittsburgh Steelers (9-3) defense collected five sacks and forced five turnovers in a convincing 33-10 beating of the New England Patriots (7-5) on Sunday for their third straight win.
The Patriots actually held a 10-3 advantage late in the second quarter after 2-yard touchdown run from Sammy Morris in the first quarter and a Stephen Gostkowski 29-yard field goal in the second but Roethlisberger evened the score at 10-10 with 1:55 left in the half when he hit Santonio Holmes on a 19-yard touchdown pass.
That final touchdown in the first half sparked a scoring outburst from the Steelers in the second half that the Patriots could do nothing to stop.
After Jeff Reed kicked a 25-yard field goal to grab a 13-10 advantage the Patriots fumbled the ensuing kickoff and moments later Roethlisberger hit Hines Ward on an 11-yard touchdown pass for a 20-10 lead. Matt Cassel then fumbled on the Patriots next possession and that turned into another Reed field goal as the Steelers carried a 23-10 lead into the final frame.
Cassel once again fumbled on the Patriots next possession and while the Steelers couldn’t convert that into points after Reed’s field goal attempt sailed wide left they intercepted Cassel when New England took over and Reed connected from 45-yards out for a 26-10 lead. Cassel was then picked off again as the patriots were driving and Lawrence Timmons returned it 89 yards down to the one-yard line and Gary Russell pounded it in to cap the run of 30 unanswered points.
