Romania’s first general election since joining the European Union in 2007 remains tight as Liberal Democrats (PDL) and Social Democrats (PSD) have polled even at 33% while the ruling National Liberals (PNL) are currently polling at 18% with 93% of the vote counted.
The tight numbers could result in problems as none of the parties would hold a majority, making it tough to form a coalition government.
Romanian President Traian Basescu has said he would prefer a center-right government and while his PDL party trails significantly there is no law that requires him to select a prime minister from the winning party.
The general elections are being held to fill both chambers of the 452-member parliament.
