Sri Lanka Military Recaptures Town Near Tamil Tigers Stronghold

The Sri Lankan military has said it has recaptured the northern town of Kokavil, nearly two decades after it fell to the insurgent Tamil Tigers.

Kokavil sits just 12 miles south of the Tamil Tigers stronghold of Kilinochchi, leaving the military within striking distance. The Sri Lankan government has said the fall of Kilinochchi was imminent and they would be turning their attention on Mullaitivu, another stronghold where several Tigers are said to be concentrated.

Tamil Tigers have accused the Sri Lankan military of using cluster bombs in their attacks, killing several displaced people which included women and children.

The rebels have been fighting for a separate homeland for Tamils since 1983 and the battles have led to more than 70,000 deaths.
