Hillary Clinton has picked up the nomination as Secretary of State for President-elect Barack Obama, joining together the once bitter rivals in an administration that will assume office on January 20.
The announcement on Monday ended weeks of speculation that Obama would nominate Clinton for Secretary of State and bury the hatchet that nearly divided the Democratic Party during the 2008 presidential election.
Obama narrowly defeated Clinton for the Party’s presidential nomination but that battle caused severe friction within the Party. Clinton eventually threw her support behind Obama and campaigned for him in the weeks months leading up to his election against Republican John McCain.
During the press conference held in Chicago Obama also announced the rest of his security team. Obama named Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense; General James Jones as National Security Adviser; Janet Napolitano as Department of Homeland Security; Susan Rice as Ambassador to the U.N.; and Eric Holder as Attorney General.
