President-elect Barack Obama announced his security team on Monday morning and Robert Gates will continue in his role as Defense Secretary, becoming Obama’s lone carry-over from the George Bush administration.
Obama had said he would nominate at least one Republican in his cabinet and Gates fit that bill as he was appointed as Defense Secretary by Bush two years ago.
During the Monday morning press conference held in Chicago Obama unveiled the rest of his security team with Hillary Clinton getting the most recognition after being nominated as Obama’s Secretary of State. The two had a tumultuous relationship during the Democratic primaries but following Obama earning the nomination she threw her support behind his campaign.
Also named during the security team announcement James Jones was named National Security Adviser, Janet Napolitano named to head Department of Homeland Security, Susan Rice will become Ambassador to the U.N. and Eric Holder will become Attorney General.
