Husband Suspected of Killing Wife of 40 Years For Not Paying Cable Bill

The distraught family of a Staten Island, New York woman whose husband is suspected of killing her in anger over cable TV says their marriage was a 38-year long nightmare.

"Her husband is the essence of evil - mean, vile and arrogant, a horror," said Camille Leone, sister of the slain Blanche Scala. "He beat the crap out of her."

Thomas Scala, 57, was charged with assault in the Nov. 26 beating of his late wife Blance - and could face upgraded murder charges, according to Police sources. Scala, who has a long history of health woes, was charged Thursday after his release from the hospital. It was a previous stay at Staten Island University Hospital that authorities say ignited his fury at 59-year-old Blanche.

According to family members, Thomas Scala was enraged that his wife didn't visit him over the Thanksgiving holiday - and that she didn't pay for premium cable channels during his hospitalization.

"Yeah, he argued with her over the cable," said Gloria Sellitto, 53, another of the victim's sisters. "He argued with her over all those stupid things."

After nearly 40 years of marriage, Blanche Scala confided in her sisters about her husbands brutality at Thanksgiving dinner - and the fatal attack occurred just two days later.

"She told us that he started pushing her around, that he choked her and she was scared to go to sleep at night," said Leone, 64, of Brooklyn.

"We told her not to live there anymore, to come live with one of her sisters. But she was very loyal to him."

Thomas Scala is back in his New Dorp Beach home after his arraignment Friday for assault and criminal mischief.
