Larry Langford, the 60-year-old Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, has been arrested by the FBI on charges of bribery and money laundering.
The arrest, which included securities broker Bill Blount and lobbyist Al Lapierre, came following a lawsuit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission. According to the lawsuit Langford accepted money from both Blount and Lapierre while he was serving as president of the Jefferson County Commission. Langford took that money and then steered Jefferson County bond business in the direction of the two men.
According to the SEC the three men attempted to hide loans and payments made to Langford through elaborate measures. Langford is said to have been involved a series of check funneling operations to hide the loans and is accused of accepting a number of bribes while he was with the Jefferson County Commission.
