Lance Armstrong has announced that he will be racing in the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia in 2009, ending a three-year retirement from competitive cycling. His return to elite racing will be made on Jan. 20 when he takes part in the Tour Down Under in Australia.
Armstrong, winner of seven consecutive Tour de France races, is part of the Astana team and that will likely relegate him to a supporting role in most races. The 37-year-old has said his return to cycling is to bring further awareness to the fight against cancer.
His participation in the 2009 Giro d’Italia will be his first.
