Thai Protesters Agree to End Occupation of Bangkok Airports after Court Rules Against Prime Minister

Thai anti-government protesters who had shut down the country’s two main airports have agreed to end their occupation following a court ruling that forced Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat to step down from office.

Protesters demanding Wongsawat’s removal had already occupied government offices in Bangkok and on November 26 they took control of the city’s main airport. The airport takeover halted flights to and from Thailand and left thousands of tourists stranded in the country.

Both the Suvarnabhumi international airport and the smaller Don Mueang airport were targeted by the protesters who ignored military orders to disband.

On Dec. 2 a Thai court ruled that Wongsawat should be banned from politics and his party disbanded following evidence of election fraud. That ruling paved the way for the protesters to end their occupation of the airports and flights could resume as early as Dec 4.

A leader of the anti-government People’s Alliance for Democracy announced the end of the protests declaring, “The People's Alliance for Democracy has agreed to cease protesting after a long-running 192-day campaign.”
