Iraqi Court Hands Chemical Ali Second Death Sentence

Ali Hassan al-Majid, better known as Chemical Ali, has received a second death sentence from the Iraqi High Tribunal following a trial that focused on the Iraqi army’s response to a Shia uprising in 1991.

During the trial the court heard testimony detailing the Iraqi army’s actions during the period following the end of the first Gulf War. As the Shia community launched an uprising then president Saddam Hussein ordered troops to crush the rebellion.

Majid, a cousin of Hussein, was serving as Iraq’s defense minister and his response to the uprising sled to an estimated 100,000 Shia deaths which included mass executions. In the court’s decision the judge ruled Majid would be executed “by hanging for committing willful killings and crimes against humanity.”

In February Majid was sentenced to death for his involvement in the killing of more than 100,000 Kurds in what was called the Anfal campaign. It was during these killings that Majid was nicknamed Chemical Ali for his use of gas attacks. He had been convicted of genocide in June 2007.

There has been no date set for his execution.
