British Airways Eyeing Possible Merger with Qantas Airways

British Airways has acknowledged that they have been exploring the possibility of merging with Australia’s Qantas Airways but there remain several hurdles that would have to be cleared before such a move.

One hurdle involves Australian law which stipulates that Qantas must be 51% Australian-owned and that only 25% can be owned by a foreign airline. British Airways held an 18.25% stake in Qantas before selling in 2004 to pay off debt.

Ministers in Australia are looking to change the rules so that while 51% of Qantas remains Australian-owned the remaining 49% can be owned by a single foreign airline.

According to BA the merger would create a dual-listed company enabling it to be listed in London and Australia.
