Mexico’s Defense Ministry released a statement Wednesday saying the military has arrested a man in connection with the killing of a U.S. immigration agent. ICE agent Jaime Zapata died February 15 after being shot by a group of gunmen while driving on a highway near San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Agent Victor Avila was wounded.
Authorities believe the gunmen belong to the Zetas drug cartel. An unidentified U.S. official said authorities have identified a “handful” of people believed to be involved in the shooting.
Shortly after the incident, the secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security condemned the attack. "Let me be clear: Any act of violence against our ICE personnel -- or any DHS personnel -- is an attack against all those who serve our nation and put their lives at risk for our safety. The full resources of our department are at the disposal of our Mexican partners in this investigation,” said Janet Napolitano.
