U.S. Officials Reportedly Warned India Ahead of Mumbai Attacks

According to reports surfacing in U.S. media outlets India had been warned about a possible threat at least a month prior to the deadly Mumbai attacks that unfolded last week.

Those reports have indicated that U.S. officials told India they had learned of a plot about a potential attack launched by sea and identified locations in Mumbai that were susceptible to the attack. One location was the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, the scene of much of the carnage that was actually carried out last week.

While Mumbai had been on high alert there were obvious signs that security had been relaxed at several locations including the two hotels that were attacked.

At least 188 people were killed in the Mumbai attacks and several hundred more injured. Ten locations inside the city were targeted by the terrorists. Nine terrorists had been killed in the attacks and a tenth remains in custody. That suspect is believed to be linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba group, also known as the Army of the Pure.

That group has denied any involvement in the Mumbai attacks. Pakistan has also denied any involvement in the attacks and has offered to help in the investigation.

Prevention of the Mumbai attacks has taken center stage in India as many inside the country demand to know why precautions weren’t in place. India’s navy chief admitted there were “systemic failures” in the country’s security and intelligence services.
