Over the past four months nearly 500 people in Zimbabwe have died as a result of a cholera outbreak that his hit nearly every region in the troubled African nation.
At least 484 people have died while more than 11,700 cases have been reported as conditions in Zimbabwe continue to crumble as political division and economic crisis diverts badly needed assistance to the country’s sanitation and health sectors.
The country’s capital, Harare, is now without clean water due to a shortage in purification chemicals and unsanitary water is often a spark that ignites a cholera outbreak. While there are treatments for cholera many of the regions affected by the outbreak don’t have access to medicine and this has led to significant fatalities.
Zimbabwe has been hit by staggering inflation that has left the economy in ruin, causing cutbacks in many of the services that could prevent the cholera outbreak. The problems are exacerbated by the current political situation in which President Robert Mugabe and his ZANU-PF party refuse to adhere to a power-sharing deal forged with MDP party leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
For nearly nine months the country has been at odds over the results of the presidential elections. Tsvangirai won the vote in the March elections but because he did not secure a large enough majority a runoff was called at which time Tsvangirai dropped out of the race just days before the second vote. He said Mugabe had been using intimidation and violence to keep MDP supporters from voting and that the election had been flawed.
Mugabe declared himself the winner but after the international community demanded a power-sharing agreement to ensure aid a deal was struck. That deal has hit a snag as Tsvangirai has complained about the appointment of ministers.
