While congress continues to battle health care reform, lawmakers in some states feel that they are left with no other choice to balance their budget than to cut some state-funded programs. The latest casualty in the budget wars are drug and alcohol rehab programs.
Illinois lawmakers have passed a law, that becomes effective March 15, 2011, which completely cuts state funding for all drug and alcohol treatment programs. After that date, only federal funds will remain available to fund such programs.
“Economic times are tough,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “States are feeling the pressure to balance their budgets and, unfortunately, critical substance abuse programs are being affected. Federal funds still do remain available; however, those funds aren’t unlimited and, as a result, much-needed drug and alcohol abuse prevention programs for youth will be drastically decreased. We hope that state and federal lawmakers will work together to ensure that critically needed programs that will help the youth of our country, and others, will not be terminated and that we will continue to provide the tools necessary to support the war on drugs and the abuse of alcohol.”
State and federal lawmakers continue to be hopeful that, in the upcoming health care debates, true reform will come about, paving a brighter, healthy future for America.
