Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader has ordered an inquest into recent arrests that have targeted opposition activists who used the social networking site Facebook to announce plans of protests and rallies.
Sanader, the target of much of the protests, has expressed concern over the arrests saying, “This is not about this or that government or party, but about freedom.” He continued, “No one should be detained or arrested in Croatia for expressing different views.”
Activists were using Facebook as a means to form groups of anti-government protesters and transmit posters and event schedules.
At least two activists have been arrested but police have argued that the arrests were made because they were using Nazi symbols, an illegal act, in their depiction of Sanader.
Sanader has promised to institute reforms to the justice system in Croatia as it continues to try and gain entry to the European Union.
