Protest marches organized by doctors and nurses angered by the worsening cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe has been broken up by police.
The demonstration were to take place in the capital city of Harare but police arrived and ordered the medical workers to disperse, in some cases using batons to move the protesters.
Zimbabwe has been hit hard by a cholera outbreak that has now claimed more than 560 lives since August. The country has sunk into an economic crisis and as a result the health and sanitation sectors have been severely affected. Most of the country is without clean water and there are several incidents of sewage flowing in streets.
With no money for the health sector there has been no way to stop the cholera outbreak which is inflamed by poor drinking water and unsanitary conditions.
Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has blamed the Cholera outbreak on Western sanctions yet those sanctions have targeted Mugabe and his government and not the people. Mugabe remains the country’s leader despite an election that was believed to be fraudulent.
Mugabe has refused to adhere to a power-sharing deal with opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and as a result many of the sanctions remain in place.
